Need hope? Life got you down? Climate change rhetoric depressing you? Constant lies in the media, continuous political news pounding you down day in and day out? Inflation, bank statements, creditors making you feel the crunch? Muslim terror attacks, death, genocide, and wars making you fearful?
I’ve got some good news for you!
It’s easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down with information overload that makes you lose hope. America has been pushed down and battered with controversy and race and guilt over the last 8 years and it’s time for a comeback!
Take a deep breath. Clear your mind. Prepare for some good news. Ready for it?
You live in America, still the country that EVERY OTHER nation in the world envies and tries to send its people to. The immigration and refugee problem is not a problem for you personally. On an individual basis, it is proof that YOU live in a country with so many freedoms and benefits that people wish they could be here just like you. YOU ARE FREE. YOU LIVE IN THE ONE COUNTRY THAT EVERYONE ELSE WISHES THEY COULD BE A CITIZEN OF. That means something, maybe something that you have not thought about. You enjoy many freedoms and benefits that others do not. Regardless of your politics, maybe you should step back and think about the woes of other nations and why this one is different.
You are alive and have your health, at least to the extent that you can see to read this and move your hands to scroll through the screen. Don’t take that for granted. Pause a moment and thank God that you have your eyesight and health. Take a deep breath and be thankful. Did you eat something today? Do you have food in your refrigerator or cupboard? Many people do not. I remember when I had barely $2 to buy food and just lived on ramen noodles for weeks on end. Today, I have more food than I could eat in a week! If the world went to hell, I would survive in my house for at least a week without even having to worry about food. That is wealth that many parts of the world don’t have.
Do you have family? I do. I am blessed with a wife and two children (one newborn). I can go home today and I have someone waiting for me. Regardless of how bad work was, or if I have to walk home in the heat, I have people that want me to come home. Do you have that? Can you be that for someone else? Friends and family are a blessing, don’t ever forget it. Even at the worst of times, if you have someone to love and if you have someone that depends on you and loves you, you are blessed. Things don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. People do.
Do you have friends? I have friends in my city (just a couple that I work with). I have a couple of good neighbors (when was the last time you went out and actually had a good conversation with your neighbors?). I have friends in California, Missouri, New Mexico, Indiana, and many other states. My father once told me that God blesses people with different kinds of wealth; monetary, influence and power, prestige, knowledge, and people. I may not have very many of those things but I do have more friends than I can count. I have learned that “To have friends, a man must show himself friendly” – the Bible. God has blessed me with many friends and I thank you all for being there for me. Find someone today and smile at them for no reason. You will be amazed to see that they may very well smile back at you!
The point is simple. You have more to be thankful for than you know. Sometimes the cacophony of news media, social media, cell phones, radio, and TV overwhelms you. At those times, it would do you good to shut it all out and live, if even for a mere few moments, as nature and nature’s God intended. Reflect on your humanity, what really matters in your life, and the relationships that you have. Take a deep breath and simply live. Step outdoors, away from all your electronics, and look at the sky, the clouds, the mountains if you are so lucky, and bask in the sunlight or the coolness of the shade. Take 30 seconds to be a human on this green and blue Earth!
I promise you that your life is better than you know and sometimes the news and politics tries to make you think that it is not. Make a difference right now in your attitude and view of your life.
As a concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl once said,
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances”.
Go ahead. Take a bottle or glass of water and step outdoors or look out the window.
As long as it takes you to drink that water, reflect on your freedoms and your life right now. Be thankful….and then pass this on to someone who needs a boost. Enjoy your life!
